University Library at the Toruń Archival Picnic

On June 11, at 11.00 - 17.00 the Toruń Archival Picnic will be held at M. Rapacki Square next to Caesar's Arch, organized for the first time jointly by Toruń archivists, librarians, genealogists and museologists. The main slogan of the Picnic is "Toruń, the City of Archivists", which is reflected in the number and diversity of institutions collecting materials relating to the history of our city. The University Library of the Nicolaus Copernicus University will also have a stand at the picnic, presenting collections of manuscripts and social life documents.

Among the inventory of over 5,000 manuscripts and records of a very diverse nature, there are both medieval codes and the legacies of scholars and people of culture and social activists, primarily professors of the Nicolaus Copernicus University. The library also has its own archive, which contains files created by its organizational units from its establishment in 1945 to the present day. These files, stored in two separate warehouses, now occupy over 100 meters of shelves.

A separate collection in the library is quasi-archival documents of social life - real treasures of everyday life, full of stories about past and present times. Invitations to exhibitions, leaflets from festivals, theater, film and election posters, photographs from anniversary celebrations are fragments of history, records of everyday events in cultural, economic, political, religious, social and family life. Toruniana constitutes the largest resource. Particularly noteworthy are the collections related to the history of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, the University Library, the Scientific Society, and the Wilam Horzyca Theater, galleries, museums and the 1989 elections. Thanks to these unusual publishing forms, everyday life becomes extraordinary.
